Job Descreption:
This position deals primarily with the new technology and products related to Harmonic’s On-Demand video systems. The key focus or this position in on the development of on-demand ecosystems which consists of Harmonic’s on-demand products with our partners’ complementary products in applications for IPTV and cable delivery systems. It also is focused on IP-based video delivery systems and the transport of compressed video/audio over large WANs. Experience with IP network architectures, IP routing, and multilayer switched networks is required in addition to strong knowledge of digital video systems. This position is suited to a Lead System Engineer with a background in new system development and with the experience and the aptitude to perform integration of new products into systems focused on advanced digital broadcast and on-demand systems for Cable and IPTV. Good system engineering skills as well as leadership and technical know-how are required to be successful in this position. Dependent on the candidate’s background and experience in management this position may also have several field system engineers reporting to it.
Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.
Technical Experience:
• Have a minimum of 10+ years of relevant on-demand digital video industry experience and 3-5 years in IP network architecture and IP routing.
• Good verbal and written communications skills.
• Good understanding of IP networking, configuration, and associated network dynamics.
• Some software programming experience in C++, PERL, and Python as well as familiarity with Linux and Windows operating systems.
• Demonstrated understanding of most major technical disciplines associated with end-to-end system design, integration, and testing of on-demand digital video and associated delivery systems. These include, but not limited to, the current protocols, technologies and practices in the following areas:
o Good understanding of Video-on-Demand (VOD) and video servers.
o Hands-on experience with On-Demand system integration, test and deployment preferably in field deployment applications
o Understanding of Conditional Access Systems.
o Understanding of Network management Systems.
o MPEG-2/DVB and MPEG-4 H.264/AVC system experience.
o Up to date knowledge of digital video system solutions (off-air, DBS, cable, telco, wireless, etc.)
o Some understanding of video compression technologies and video quality for Standard and High Definition.
o Experience with digital video manipulation techniques such as Rate Shaping and Digital Program Insertion (DPI) is a plus.
Responsibilities:
A Development Systems Engineer must demonstrate the ability to consistently carry out the following responsibilities.
• System integration of Harmonic newly developed products into architectures associated with partners products targeting specific customer deployment.
• Verification of system functionality, performance, and behavior that is key to the ecosystem in the customers’ deployments.
• Analysis and troubleshooting of problems related video/audio compression, multiplexing and forward error correction in video streams.
• Preparation of integration plans and conduct end-to-end system integrations for different applications/environments
• Interface with product development engineering for problem resolution.
• Create software tools, scripts, and automation software for validation of system operations and performance.
• Conduct system pre-QA acceptance testing in preparation for hand off of new systems to the QA team.
• Interface with lead systems engineer and/or customers to verify implementation plan and ensure successful deployment according to system design specifications.
• Generate documentation such as test plans and system ICD’s.
• Configure networking equipment required for system test beds and perform network testing.
Perform MPEG analysis using analyzers such as Acterna DTS or software base analysis Tools.
